Asian Homestyle Slow Braised Beef

Convenient Asian Slow Cooked Beef

Welcome to my first series – Cooking Dinner for 21 Days! I will be filming what I made for dinner on TikTok, showing you some of my go-to dinner meals. These will be recipes that I create as I go since I love creating new “recipes,” Since I’m working from home, nothing makes me more excited than a delicious home-cooked meal after a long day. So today, I’m making a recipe I can prepare earlier in the day, and it is ready to go for dinner time!

Today I am making Asian Slow Braised Beef 家常燉牛肉. I know I have a ton of beef stew recipes, like the classic Taiwanese Beef Stew. Made of delicious short ribs and carrots stewed to perfection, this dish is less of a soup, and more of a saucy beef dish that’s part of a family-style dinner to pair with rice or mashed potatoes. This recipe is a convenient version that takes the same amount of simmering, but a lot less active cooking time compared to the traditional recipes. These steps actually makes cooking a lot more stress-free!

Best Beef Cuts For Braising

I am using beef short ribs for this braised beef. It is my favorite cut for anything that requires slow simmering or braising. It has tons of marbling and collagen that melts into the braise while cooking, and a ton of flavor. You can also use oxtail, shank, brisket, or chuck roast, because these cuts also softens when simmered as well. I marinate the short ribs in a simple five spice marinade, then I brown them before simmering in the braise. This way, the marinade, the sear, and the braise help the beef develop that extra caramelized grilled flavor.

How To Make Asian Stewed Beef

  1. In a large bowl, marinate the beef with the five-spice powder, 2 tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tbsp of sugar, salt, and pepper for 1 hour.
  1. In a hot pan, drizzle in oil and add in the beef. Brown the meat on all sides and set aside in a bowl. Now add in the onions and sauté until translucent. Once the onions are translucent, add in garlic and sauté for another 2-3 minutes. Finally, add in the beef and sauté together for 1-2 minutes.
  1. Add in soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, mirin, Chinese cooking wine, and sauté together until everything is mixed well. Turn the heat to medium-low and cover for 1 hour. After an hour, add in diced carrots and cover for another 1-1.5 hour.
  1. Serve with hot rice & garnish with green onion & sesame seeds.
