Completing My First Half Marathon As a Beginner

At the start of the year, my friend Ivonne asked if I wanted to do a half marathon with her. And my first reaction was, “You’re joking, right?” Because I used to hate running. But, I wanted to do something to take my body and my mind off the grief inside. Somewhere along the way, running became my therapy.

Four months later, I went from couch to half marathon! Now that I’ve completed my first half-marathon, I am so proud of myself and my body for showing up for me, and a really big thank you for all your words of encouragement as I was training! Next up, Dom and I are running the Disney Halloween Half Marathon, so let me know in the comments if you have any tips or suggestions for this next race!

Half-Marathon Training Tips For Complete Beginners

Here are some of the tips that I’d give someone who’s interested in starting training for their first marathon!

  1. Start slow. I cannot emphasize this enough. Build up your cardio base over time. You’ll slowly, slowly add up and before you know it, you’ll be going so much faster and your distance will improve by so much as well. If you force yourself on long runs you’re not ready for, you’ll get burned out or injured.
  2. Start on the treadmill. I used this to help me understand my running speed and learn how to adjust before going on long runs.
  3. Make sure to stretch and wear proper shoes to avoid injury!
  4. Fuel your body properly. Make sure you’re getting enough electrolytes, water, and food regularly, and bring nutrition during your runs if needed. Get to know what food or nutrition works with your body during training.
  5. Get a personalized training plan. Use a plan that is personalized to you and feels right for your training. I use the Runna app, which makes training plans based on my skill level and the route I’ve signed up for.

My Top Marathon Running Gear

Marathon gear isn’t just about looking the part. It can seriously affect how your run feels, from comfort to injury prevention. I learned that early on. In my first month of running, I got injured because my shoes didn’t support my knees, and I had to take 2.5 weeks off to heal. So I’m sharing the gear that’s actually helped me, in the order I’d recommend trying it.

You don’t need everything, because this stuff adds up fast. But, the right key pieces can make a huge difference. The most important gear is definitely running shoes that are supportive for your knees, joints, and body.

Hoka Bondi 9

The number one thing that is most worth investing in is a GOOD PAIR OF RUNNERS! Since I was injured from unsupportive running shoes before, I needed something comfy with the right level of support.

These Hoka Bondi 9 running shoes are so supportive, they made a whole world of difference. In fact, I love this shoe so much I got two pairs: one for indoor training, one for outdoor.

SHOKZ OpenRun Pro 2

The second thing that I invested in was a pair of SHOKZ OpenRun Pro 2. I hate AirPods because they always fall out of your ears while running. These super comfy, open ear, bone conduction headphones do not fall off at all! The battery life with USBC charging is so good you don’t need to worry about it dying on a run.

I got all my family and friends around me to get these too because it is SO MUCH SAFER compared to traditional headphones when you are out. You can have loud music, but still be aware of your surroundings.

Salomon Active Skin 8

I know there are a lot of “vest police” out there, but I won’t part with my Salomon Active Skin 8 I don’t want to have my phone, wallet, keys, gels, and whatever weighing me down and bouncing around in my pockets while I run. So, 90% of the time, I will run with my vest. This one is super comfy and I love the green color I got!

FEETURES Elite Ultra Light

These FEETURES Elite Ultra Light socks saved my feet from blisters! Using moisture-wicking fabric and anatomical compression, these socks eliminate friction and movement inside the shoe. I don’t see people talk about this online enough, but running socks make a HUGE difference, especially if you get blisters often.

They are on the pricier side but I really think it’s worth the investment! I only have 2 pairs and I just wash them often. I haven’t had blisters ever since!

Garmin Venu 3S Watch

I love this Garmin Venu 3S Watch so much. It is so lightweight and also really cute. I love the gold hardware and the fact that you can change the cover. The battery life lasts for a full week.

You can track a ton of different information like your heart rate or your cadence while you’re doing your workouts, and see all of your stats. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a smartwatch.

Hoka Ora Recovery Slides

These Hoka Ora Recovery Slides are a game changer. These thick cushiony slides help me recover so much after a long run. When I’m walking around the house, I always have on these slides. It supports my knee even through running up and down the stairs or standing throughout the day. So, these I highly recommend picking up as well. Even if you’re not running, I think it’s just really important to have supportive shoes even when you’re inside.

Mid-run Fuel & Nutrition For Sensitive Stomachs

Next, let’s talk about nutrition. These actually made a huge difference for me, especially during my long runs. There are so many different types of nutrition out there. So, it really depends on your stomach, and I highly recommend testing bunch of them before the big race.

I have a sensitive stomach, and I get nervous when it comes to marathon endurance fuels, especially gels, because they can upset my stomach.  I need portable fuel that actually tastes good, sits well, and gives me the energy I need to finish strong. Here’s some snacks that I genuinely love during my training.

Maurten Gel 100

Maurten Gel 100 is my go to running gel. I have a sensitive stomach so I get nervous when it comes to gels, but this one does not upset my stomach AT ALL! Plus it actually tastes good too. I only use it on my longer runs—around every 5–6 km I will eat half, and it makes a HUGE difference in my runs!

Honey Stinger Energy Waffles

A lot of fuels can be too sweet or have a weird texture, but these Honey Stinger Energy Waffles are SO yummy! They’re nice and chewy, and you can taste the real honey. These cookies are also super gentle on my stomach. I personally can’t run and eat these at the same time, so I usually eat these before my long runs!

XAct Energy Fruit Bars

These XAct Energy Fruit Bars are my new obsession right now. These caffeinated gummy candy-like bars are made with real fruit pulp. They’re tasty and I usually split these with my friend half each. They are great to have before a run.

Wakewater Electrolyte

I’ve tried a lot of electrolytes while training, and WakeWater’s Electrolytes is the one I keep coming back to. It has a solid mix of sodium and potassium without any sugar, fake sweeteners, or weird aftertaste. In fact, I find that it tastes way better compared to LiquidIV & Organika!

I like to have these before, during, and after my runs. They keep me hydrated, keep me energized, and they also really help with the recovery as well. It dissolves fully in water, and is easy for your stomach to absorb. Our fave flavours are their Lemon Lime & Fruit Punch.

My Favorite Marathon Training Apps

Runna

Runna is a structured marathon training app that builds personalized plans for your race goals. It’s like having a running coach in your pocket. The race I am running has a lot of hills, so I love that they have a mix of easy runs, hill training, interval training, plus long runs.

I’ve been following the Runna plan to train for my half marathon. With their plan, I went from not being able to run 1k to now able to run up to 16k in less than 3 months!

Strava

Strava is my go-to app for tracking runs. It turns solo training into a game with segments, kudos, and monthly challenges that actually keep you motivated.

Seeing other people’s runs and being able to share my running journey really motivates me to keep going every day. I post all my runs / walks there, and it makes me feel that extra sense of accomplishment from my training.

I love sharing this journey with all of you, so follow me on Strava!

My Favorite Vancouver Running Stores

I know everyone’s feet, everyone’s training plan, everyone’s goal is different. So, what I really recommend is actually going to your local running shop for some of your most important running gear. Go get your feet tested, get your running style tested, and they will actually recommend the best shoe for you. Their staff are usually super helpful if you have specific concerns, or if you’re curious about other gear. Also, the shoes they have usually have TONS of support! Here are 2 of my favorite running stores in Vancouver.

Forerunners Vancouver

Founded in 1986 by Peter Butler, an Olympic marathon runner, Forerunners offer running gear for all experience levels.

I came here to get my first pair of running shoes and the staff was super helpful and knowledgeable! I went home happy with a pair of new shoes that fit my feet just right.

Fit First Footwear

FitFirst Footwear is an amazing local owned and operated running specialty shop with a ton of great deals.

I get all my nutrition and most of my running gear from here. There’s so much variety you can definitely find something that fits you!
