Hosting A 14 Course Dinner for 15 Family Members
Since Dom’s grandma is visiting from Taiwan, I wanted to host her and the rest of our family for a 14 course family dinner. It sounds like a ton of work, but thankfully, my mom was there to help me plan, shop, and prep everything. We have all sorts of dishes planned, from BBQ Soy Glazed Ribs to this super easy Cheesy Baked Napa Cabbage. This dish was so delicious that my cousin immediately asked for the recipe! Safe to say, this creamy baked cabbage was one of the first dishes to disappear.
Creamy Baked Cabbage Ingredients
- 1 napa cabbage
- 1 pack bacon
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- 1/3 cup flour
- 2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp dashi powder
- 1 tsp white pepper
- shredded cheese

Napa Cabbage
Napa cabbage is perfect for this cheesy cabbage bake. The thick, crunchy stems stay nice and crisp even after baking, giving the dish some bite. The soft, leafy parts, on the other hand, soak up all that rich, creamy sauce like a sponge, absorbing a bit of the saltiness and smokiness of bacon. Plus, that little touch of sweetness helps balance out the rich heavy cream and cheese, so the whole dish feels cozy without being too much.

Dashi Cream Sauce
The roux-based dashi bacon cream sauce creates a rich, velvety base that’s both smoky and deeply savory. The roux makes it particularly rich, but that savory umami from the dashi powder and the subtle heat from white pepper keeps it from feeling too heavy. It’s satisfying sauce to enjoy with some pasta, rice, or potatoes.
Here’s the secret: as the cabbage bakes, it releases even more liquid. It melds with the rest of the sauce. So, if you want that perfectly creamy texture, make sure your dashi cream mixture is on the thicker side before it goes into the oven.

How To Make Creamy Baked Cabbage
- In a pot of boiling salted water, blanch the napa cabbage for about 3-5 minutes.
- In a pan, sauté the chopped bacon for 3-4 minutes or until cooked. Set aside the bacon.
- In the same pan, melt butter and sauté minced garlic.
- Make a roux by adding flour and sautéing until it turns into a paste.
- Once thickened, add dashi, heavy cream, and white pepper.
- Add back in the cabbage and bacon and mix until everything is combined.
- Pour the mix into a casserole dish and sprinkle on shredded cheese.
- Broil on high for 5 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.

Prepping Your Baked Cabbage A Day Ahead
This Baked Cabbage Casserole is easy to prep a day ahead! Whenever I am hosting a dinner party, I prep as much as I can the day before. To do that, I blanched and sautéed the creamy bacon mix, and let it cool. Then, I move it into the container I’d bake it in, and let it rest in the fridge overnight. The next day, all you have to do is top it off with some of your favorite shredded cheese, and pop it into the oven!
