Sweet and sour mushrooms over a bowl of fluffy white rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds, ready to eat

This is my grandma’s recipe that my dad used to beg her for as a child! Now, it’s our turn to make this for someone we love! This sweet and sour mushroom is PERFECT as an appetizer, or over a steaming bowl of rice. It only takes 20 minutes, because mushrooms cook SUPER FAST!

When I feel like cutting down on meat, I LOVE using mushrooms as a meat substitute. It’s so “meaty”, yet so healthy. This dish is absolutely vegetarian and vegan-friendly, so it’s a great choice for potlucks or entertaining too! For my meat lovers, I’d suggest my Sweet and Sour Garlic Short Ribs or Sweet and Sour Chicken recipes!

The life of this dish is the mushroom’s Sweet and Sour Sauce!

You can honestly use it to stir fry EVERYTHING – try tofu, broccoli, or any other of your favorite veggies. It’s sweet, sour, and savory, all at once. I can SERIOUSLY finish a bowl of rice with just the sauce. If you want a thicker sauce that clings better to your mushrooms, add a tablespoon of cornstarch to thicken it up.

This is so yummy and easy to cook!! I used bella mushroom, it was a little bit plain due to the size of the mushroom. I will try again with cremini!

    1. Hi Rajeev, yes, you can use white wine vinegar instead of rice vinegar. It will be a little sharper in flavor, so I’d add just a little bit less. But you can taste the sauce as you go to see if you like the flavor, and adjust.
