Pan Fried Spicy Orange Chicken Thigh

This Pan Fried Spicy Orange Chicken Thigh gives you that same Chinese takeout flavor in only 20 minutes. This is the kind of recipe I make when I’m craving something a little spicy, a little cozy, but still fresh and easy. Pan-frying gives this dish that satisfyingly crispy chicken skin with way less oil and effort.

On weeknights when you just want something familiar and tasty, this spicy chicken wakes the tastebuds right up without too much effort. I love packing this chicken dish with rice and a few veggies for a simple bento-style lunch the next day as well!

Spicy Orange Chicken Thigh Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skin-on chicken thighs, or just boneless chicken thigh works well too
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil (for frying)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1.5 tbsp vegetarian oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice
  • 1-2 tsp red chili flakes (optional for spice)

Pan Fried Chicken thigh

I love using boneless chicken thighs with the skin on for this recipe because they stay super juicy and flavorful, even after pan-frying. The skin get crispy, and adds just the right amount of fatty flavor. I’m keeping the chicken thigh whole to keep the juices inside while cooking. If you prefer something leaner, skinless thighs or chicken breast work too. You can even swap the chicken for tofu or cauliflower for a vegetarian twist!

Pan-frying the chicken instead of deep-frying gives you the same crispy texture, with way less oil. Before cooking, make sure to pat the chicken dry so the seasoning can stick better. Then, dust with the cornstarch mix to make it extra crispy, and gives the orange glaze a better surface to cling on to. Mixing in garlic powder, salt, and pepper keeps the thigh seasoned but simple, so it matches well with the spicy orange glaze.

Spicy Orange Glaze

This chicken thigh is spicy, savory, and a little tart thanks to the spicy orange glaze. The sauce comes together with minced garlic, soy sauce, vegetarian oyster sauce, honey, fresh orange juice, and red chili, creating that perfect balance of sweet, salty, and heat. The fresh orange juice and honey give the glaze a bright, super fresh natural sweetness that thickens as it cooks down into that glossy, sticky coating.

How To Make Spicy Orange Chicken Thigh

Time needed: 20 minutes

  1. Season the Chicken

Pat the chicken dry, then season both sides with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Lightly coat with cornstarch, just enough to create a thin, even layer.

  2. Pan-Fry

Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Place the chicken skin-side down and pan-fry for 6 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and set aside.

  3. Make the Sauce

In the same pan, add minced garlic, soy sauce, vegetarian oyster sauce, honey, orange juice, and red chili. Simmer for 1 minute, stirring to combine and slightly thicken.

  4. Glaze the Chicken

Add the chicken back into the pan and coat evenly in the sauce. Cook on high heat for 1–2 minutes, letting the glaze bubble and caramelize beautifully.

  5. Serve

Plate and drizzle extra sauce over top. Garnish with fresh orange zest or chopped scallions if you like.

Ok, this is an amazing and easy recipe! I had bone-in thighs which took a bit longer to cook, and I subbed chili oil for the flakes, and it was so delicious! It’s versatile and you can add or take away any flavor profile you like. Thanks Tiffy 🤗

This was so delicious! The whole family loved it especially my husband – he has requested I cook this weekly. Thank you so much Tiffy!!

    1. Hi Andrea! Yes, you can use chicken breast. You may have to adjust the cooking time here, because they can get dry faster than thighs.
