Fruit Sando From Ginza’s Luxury Department Stores
Fresh Fruit Sando is one of Japan’s favorite ways to enjoy fresh fruit, and after visiting last year with my dad, I completely understand why. Itโs a quick, refreshing snack thatโs everywhere, from 7-11 to specialty stores likeย Meruhenk Sando in Ginza’s luxury department stores. The neutral base of bread and cream really gives the sour kiwis and sweet strawberries a moment to shine!
If you’ve ever visited Japan during strawberry season, you know that they LOVE strawberries. Some higher quality varieties are even sold as individual berries! Japanese Fruit Sandos might be the best ways to enjoy the freshest strawberries. So today, we’re using strawberries to make that iconic Japanese Fruit Sando!
Japanese Fruit Sando Ingredients
- 4 slices of Japanese Milk Bread
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream (at least 35% fat)
- 2 tbsp (25g) granulated sugar
- 10-12 large strawberries

Japanese Milk Bread
I’m so glad I bake my momโsย Fail-proof Milk Breadย on the weekends to make this fruit sandwich. It’s a soft, tender, and super buttery bread that will blog your mind! It’s no machine needed, so you can do this at home by hand.
For Fruit Sando, the milk bread is not toasted to keep that natural fluffiness. I also cut the edges off so the texture is the same in every bite. The softer bread helps the sandwich keep the layers together, so your fruit doesn’t slip out with every bite you take. If you don’t have milk bread, try a brioche or white sandwich bread!

Whipped Cream
Homemade whipped cream is the best, don’t you agree? Plus, with a Handheld Milk Frother, it’s actually so easy to make! It only takes 3 to 5 minutes. I love making my own whipped cream, because I can control the sweetness based on what recipe I use it for.
If you’re lactose intolerant, you can use coconut cream or any other whipped cream base substitute to whip up your non-dairy whipped cream.

Strawberries
I love using strawberries to make fruit sando, because they’re available everywhere. For whipped cream fruit sandwiches, any strawberry works as long as you keep them dry. After washing, cut the tops off the berry for a flat surface, and dry all sides of the strawberry. If you have too much moisture on the surface, cream around it will loosen. Then, your cream sandwich will fall apart a lot easier.
You can use any other fruits in your fruit sandwich – as long as you prep it the same way. If you want to make a design, make sure to lay them out so when you cut them diagonally, it gives you that perfect cross section.
