Spicy Creamy Shrimp Pasta: Customize As You Like

This Spicy Creamy Shrimp Pasta has all the flavor you need: spicy, cheesy, and aromatic. Thickened with heavy cream and parmesan cheese, this is exactly the spicy creamy meal you’re craving. Depending on how creamy you like it, you can adjust the amount of cheese and pasta water to the consistency you prefer.

If you’re making this pasta for kids and you don’t want it to be spicy, you can replace the Korean red chili paste with tomato paste. I used rigatoni for my pasta today, but you can easily switch to any other pasta, like the classic spaghetti, or a fun shaped pasta your kids will love.

Cooking With Shrimp: Peel, Clean, Marinade

I found some pretty good quality prawns this week at the market, so we’re using prawns for this pasta recipe! If you don’t have prawns, no worries. I always have frozen shrimp in the freezer. It cooks fast – perfect for making this recipe anytime.

While making shrimp recipes, I always start with seasoning the shrimp. It gives me some time to let the seasonings sink in while I prep the other ingredients. With this recipe, you can use fresh or frozen shrimp/prawns, but remember to defrost, peel, and clean the shrimp first!

Spicy Creamy Shrimp Pasta served on a plate with parsley and cheese garnish

Creamy Shrimp Pasta Ingredients

  • 400 g pasta (rigatoni)
  • 1 lb prawns, deveined & deshelled
  • 1.5 tbsp Korean red chili paste
  • 2 shallots, chopped
  • 1.5 tbsp garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Handful of parsley, chopped & separated by stem
  • ½ tbsp dried red chili flakes
  • 1 cup parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup hot pasta water (reserved)
Seasoning Mix
  1. Season the shrimp with the seasoning mix.
  2. Cook pasta based on package instructions.
  3. In a pan, drizzle in oil and turn heat up to medium high. Once pan is hot, add in shrimp and cook for 4-5 min or until shrimp is fully cooked. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, add in garlic, stems of parsley, shallots and red chili flakes. Sauté for 2-3 min or until fragrant.
  5. Add in Korean red chili paste, mix well, then add in heavy cream. Mix and let it simmer for 30 seconds – 1 min or until the sauce has thickened.
  6. Add in approximately ½ cup of pasta water, mix well. Add in cooked pasta. Add back in the shrimp, add in the cheese. Toss well to ensure all the pasta soaks up the sauce.
  7. Finish off with parsley and more parmesan cheese if needed.

I have a shellfish allergy. Can this be made with chicken? If so, would any of the ingredients portions change?

    1. Hi Lee! Yes, you can! You can replace th same amount of shrimp with chicken thigh or breast. Shrimp cooks much faster than chicken, so you may have to saute them a little longer.
