Agedashi Tofu Ingredients

Fried Tofu

Our Fried Tofu today is actually super simple! Today I’m using medium-firm tofu, which has more of the consistency of scrambled eggs. If you’re curious about more recipes for medium-firm tofu, check out my 11 tofu recipes for different types of tofu!

To fry your tofu, all you need is a light dusting of corn starch. The corn starch creates that crispy, tasty shell that we all love. Once dusted, I sometimes let it sit for a minute so the surface moisture wets the cornstarch a little better. This helps it hold better during air frying.

Grated Daikon

Grated daikon is one of the ingredients in this dish that I feel just makes this dish extra refreshing. This light, refreshing condiment is actually great for your gut. It adds a light grassy, herbal flavor, as well as a slight bitterness to the tofu. This bitterness makes the sweetness of the sauce pop, and turns a simple tofu in sauce into a complex dish.

Depending on what part of the daikon you use, the grated daikon can have a slightly different flavor. The top half of a daikon radish tends to be sweeter, while the root end tends to be a little spicier, like horseradish.

Tsuyu: A Universal Dashi-Soy Sauce

Agedashi tofu uses tsuyu as the sauce base for this dish. Tsuyu is a fairly universal sauce in Japanese cuisine made simply of dashi, mirin, and soy sauce. This sauce is used for dipping tempura, soba noodles, and of course, agedashi tofu.

I sometimes like to add some variation in this sauce by adding some yuzu pepper, shichimi togarashi (七味粉), ponzu, or some wasabi.

Dashi Stock, Soy Sauce, and Mirin based sauce that is used for soba noodles and for agedashi tofu.

  2. Drain the tofu and pat dry. Cut the tofu into 1-inch pieces and cover with corn starch.
  3. Spray your air fryer basket with oil, and place your tofu in the basket.
  4. Fry it at 380F for 15-17 minutes.

Frying Tofu with An Air Fryer

I love using the Air Fryer for frying tofu because it handles delicate foods much easier. If your tofu is too soft, it can fall apart as you’re tossing it around during deep frying. The Air Fryer solves that problem, and I get perfect cubes every time. Before you air fry your tofu, make sure to spray oil in the air fryer basket first to prevent your tofu from sticking.

If you want to make a larger batch, or prefer deep frying, I’d definitely still suggest my deep fried recipe for Agedashi Tofu!

This air fryer Japanese-style fried tofu is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and much healthier than deep-frying. Try it out—the balance of sweet and savory sauce over the crunchy tofu gives off that authentic izakaya vibe!

You block my ability to cut your recipe and paste into a Word file which is how I save my recipes. If I use your “Print Recipe” command, it always prints it out two A size pages. A waste of paper.
