Tokyo With My Parents: Tsukiji Fish Market Street Foods!

This holiday season, I surprised my parents with a trip to Tokyo – a city with a wide range of culinary treats, eating our way through the city in 8 days – starting with Tsukiji Fish Market! It’s Mom’s first time in Japan, and after a rough few months for the family, we’re all ready for some SERIOUS food therapy. Tokyo’s where it’s at—think legendary Tokyo street foods, SUPER FRESH sushi, and to-die-for omakase spots. Our first stop, we made our way to the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market, a haven for seafood AND street food lovers.

Tsukiji Outer Fish Market: ICONIC Tokyo Street Food Hotspot

Established in 1935, the ICONIC Tsukiji Fish Market has played a pivotal role in Tokyo, offering a glimpse into the bustling life one of the world’s LARGEST wholesale fish and seafood market. Although the inner wholesale market moved to Toyosu in 2018, Tsukiji’s outer market continues to thrive, drawing visitors with its array of fresh produce, unique street food, and traditional Japanese eateries.

Taste the Ocean: Tonbuya’s Unforgettable Grilled Tuna Skewers

There’s so much to see and smell in Tsukiji fish market! It wasn’t long before we were drawn to Tonboya, known for its perfectly grilled tuna skewers (¥500). The tuna, rich in natural fats, was being grilled to perfection in front of us. The sight alone had us PRACTICALLY DROOLING in anticipation. We simply could not resist.

The simplicity of the dish was its charm – once off the grill, all it needed was a sprinkle of salt, pepper, and a light drizzle of lemon to elevate its flavors. Let me tell you, the first bite was nothing short of AMAZING, and you can see it on ALL of our faces. The combination of the smoky, tender tuna with just a hint of lemon was beyond words.

It’s safe to say, this dish left us absolutely speechless. You can tell from my mom’s excited face…she LOVES this skewer, and gives it a 12 OUT OF 10! Safe to say, Tonbutya’s Grilled Tuna Skewers is a huge MUST TRY from us!

Soratsuki: A Tale of Two Strawberries (Wrapped in Mochi)

In the bustling Tsukiji Market street, I discovered a gem: Soratsuki, a mochi stall that turned my taste buds upside down. This small stall was COVERED with different varieties of mochi, but the true star was their Strawberry Daifuku. With a whole strawberry wrapped with creamy red bean paste and soft, soft hand-pounded mochi, it was an irresistible blend of flavors and textures.

They offered something extraordinary—WHITE strawberry mochi, alongside the classic red strawberry mochi. The white strawberry, encased in the softest mochi, tasted a little more tropical, while the red strawberry version brought a familiar burst of tangy juiciness. We found ourselves lining up for seconds ALMOST IMMEDIATELY after the first one disappeared!

Wagyu JyuJyu: The Ultimate Luxury Skewer

Walking by Wagyu JyuJyu’s outdoor grill, we were once again drawn in by the delicious smells. We splurged on a skewer of Wagyu beef topped with Uni, or sea urchin (¥5500), that we decided to share, given its steep price. Let me tell you, EVERY penny was worth it!

The Wagyu was like BUTTER, dissolving immediately on my tongue, while the uni added a LUXURIOUS creaminess that elevated the entire experience. The contrast was stunning—the rich, savory depth of the beef against the sweet, delicate uni created a flavor profile so complex, it left us all in awe. Oh my God, it was UNBELIEVABLY GOOD!

Tsukiji’s Best: Authentic Mini Chirashi Don

Tucked away on a bustling street near Tsukiji Market, we discovered a popular little outdoor stall that served up something extraordinary: $10 mini chirashi dons. The freshest slices of tuna and salmon, delicately placed over perfectly seasoned rice, with a dollop of wasabi and slices of ginger for that extra zing.

Dom was so smitten by the taste that he dashed back for a second bowl IMMEDIATELY. It’s incredible how something so simple could be so bursting with freshness and flavor. Chirashi Dons are so popular in Tsukiji Fish Market, you can LITERALLY find them EVERYWHERE!

Pro-tip: AVOID the salespeople trying to get you inside restaurants, and simply buy from the outdoor stands…you’ll get more bang for your bucks!

Yamacho’s Eggcellent Adventure: Tamago on a Stick

A must-try for anyone visiting Tokyo is the Tamago (egg omelet) on a stick from Yamacho (¥100), one of my personal favorites. This delightful snack is surprisingly sweet and fluffy, and reminds me of custard in both taste and texture. It’s a CRAZY mix of somehow both soft and satisfyingly dessert-like.

Despite its simple appearance, the depth of umami and the cloud-like softness on the inside make it a MUST HAVE. Don’t be deterred by the long lines at these stalls; they tend to move quickly. With the price at only ¥100, I assure you, the wait is absolutely WORTH IT!

Sipping on Tradition: Matcha Stand Maruni’s Iced Matcha Latte

At Tsukiji’s Matcha Stand Maruni, I grabbed an Iced Matcha Latte that REALLY HIT THE SPOT. This matcha cafe is run by Shingo Ito, who comes from a long line of nori seaweed specialists. I LOVE the quality of the matcha itself, sourced from Uji, Kyoto, and the traditional preparation techniques they use, RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES!

The Matcha latte was the perfect blend of sweet and bitter, the PERFECT PALATE CLEANSER after so many delicious snacks. DEFINITELY grab one in between your snacking here, because it’s SO REFRESHING!

Murakita Kaisendon: Grilled Scallops and Squid PERFECTION

Our adventures led us to Marukita Kaisendon, a hotspot in Tsukiji Fish Market. They serve Seafood Rice Bowls in their restaurant as well as grilled seafood in their street stand. The experience was AWESOME: you pick your seafood, and they grill it to PERFECTION right before your eyes. We went for the grilled buttered scallops and grilled squid, and oh, what a choice it was!

The scallops were A TREAT, served sizzling in their shells with a BUTTERY richness that was utterly surprising. The squid was perfectly grilled, with a sweet glazed sauce brushed over. You can taste the charcoal flavor in the seafood, and it’s just SO DELICIOUS!

The moment you sip the succulent juices from the scallop shell, you’re hit with a wave of sweet, savory, and umami flavors, all mingling together. It was fresh, flavorful, and a moment of pure seafood bliss that both my dad and I COULDN’T STOP raving about.

A Sushi Journey at Uogashi Shokudo Food Court

Uogashi Shokudo is a FOOD COURT HAVEN for seafood lovers, offering an array of stalls preparing dishes with the freshest ingredients directly from the market below. They’ve got meat and cafe options too, but seafood is the star. The place itself is part of the newer Uogashi building, a project by Tsukiji locals and Chuo Ward to modernize market operations in Tsukiji Fish Market.

We got a box of scallop and toro sushi, and I must say, the FRESHNESS really comes through here at Uogashi Shokudo. I can spend a WHOLE DAY just trying the food in here alone, and it’s a great way to explore different types of foods in ONE PLACE.

Marutama’s Seasonal Bliss: Real Fruit Ice Cream

Another place that had us running to grab seconds was Marutama’s ice cream (¥500). Their wide range of ice cream flavors are made with REAL INGREDIENTS you can taste. The bustling stall in the middle of Tsukiji Fish Market is popular with tourists and locals alike, because who doesn’t LOVE an ice cream cone after a day of filling up on outdoor seafood grills?

They also have a few LIMITED seasonal flavors to choose from. One thing i REALLY LOVE about Japan’s food culture is their love of seasonality. Their Izu, or persimmon flavor, REALLY tasted like persimmon! I can tell you, Dom does NOT regret lining up a second time!
