Fall Season Pumpkin Spice Latte with Hojicha

This weekend, I’m staying in! With comforting fall meals and fun seasonal drinks like my Maple Sea Salt Latte, I don’t even need to go outside. I’m reading The Thoroughbreds, by  Elin Hilderbrand and Shelby Cunningham, a book with a super fall-inspired cover. So, I wanted to make a drink for my cozy reading session that matches the relaxing fall vibes. Since it’s fall season, there’s nothing that match more than Pumpkin Spice Latte.

This Pumpkin Spice Latte is a mix of 3 layers: ice-cold milk, freshly whisked hojicha, and a rich pumpkin spice cold foam. It looks and tastes ridiculously good! Not too sweet, and super, super creamy. It is the perfect fall drink to cozy up with a book. And, it only takes only a few minutes! My cousin actually gifted me all the essential ingredients I need, so we have to try it out!

Ingredients For Pumpkin Spice Hojicha Latte

Pumpkin Spice Cold Foam

  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp milk optional, to loosen cold form
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin butter
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin spice or cinnamon

Hojicha Latte

  • 2 tsp hojicha powder
  • ¼ cup hot water
  • 0.5 cups milk
  • Ice

Pumpkin Spice Cold Foam

Cold foam has changed my home cafe game! With a few simple extra ingredients, I can add a creative twist to all of my drinks. Today’s pumpkin spice cold foam is super rich, not too sweet, and the perfect amount of spices. I’m using Trader Joe’s pumpkin butter and pumpkin pie spices for the best PSL flavor. If the foam comes out too thick, I thin it out with a splash of milk. Whipping it to a super foamy texture is easy thanks to my Handheld Milk Frother, which has been an absolute MUST HAVE with all of my home cafe drinks!

Pumpkin Butter

This Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Butter is a slow-simmered mix of pumpkin puree and spice. It has a consistency similar to apple pie filling, and a rich, spiced pumpkin flavor. If you don’t’ have pumpkin butter, or you’re not close to a Trader Joe’s, you can try replacing this step with pumpkin puree and a little bit of brown sugar or maple syrup.

Pumpkin Spice

Did you know there’s no pumpkin in pumpkin pice? It’s a mix of spices that are best used for making pumpkin pie that actually smells just like fall. I have this pumpkin pie spice mix that’s also from Trader Joe’s. I believe this one is just cinnamon, ginger, lemon peel, and nutmeg. So, if you can’t find “pumpkin spice”, I feel like you can just add cinnamon, too.

Hojicha Latte

I’m making my latte today with a base of hojicha! My favorite milk tea growing up in Taiwan was definitely hojicha latte. It has a very similar fragrance compared to roasted rice powder. So, it has a really nice toasted, nutty flavor that matches well with the warm spices in this drink. Compared to matcha, its lower caffeine content makes it the perfect gentle wake-up or afternoon tea alternative.

Hojicha is made the same way as matcha, but a lot easier to mix together. I’m using a Japanese hojicha powder that my cousin also got for me. Of course, you can replace the hojicha in this recipe with espresso or matcha for your favorite flavors.

Easy Steps For Pumpkin Spice Latte

  1. Make the Cold Foam: In a small cup, combine heavy cream, a splash of milk (if using), pumpkin spice, and pumpkin butter. Froth with a hand-held mixer or whisk until thick and foamy. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Hojicha: In another cup, whisk hojicha powder with 60 ml of hot water until smooth.
  3. Assemble the Latte: Fill a glass with ice. Pour in 100 ml of milk, then the hojicha mixture slowly on top. Gently spoon or pour the pumpkin spice cold foam on top.
  4. Optional: Dust a little extra pumpkin spice on top for a cozy touch.
