How Much I Spent For Brunch at 7-11

If you’re traveling and looking for a quick meal on a budget in Taiwan, the convenience store is your answer. To show you how much food we can get, we’re having brunch today at 7-Eleven – for under $5!

I got 5 items today, and by the end of it, I’m stuffed! Here’s a price breakdown for my items today for a total of $4.78:

Michelin Star Restaurant Rice Ball- 8.5/10

The first thing I’m trying was actually my grandma’s recommendation: 阜杭豆漿-經典飯糰, A classic rice ball from Fuhang Soy Milk, the most famous Michelin Recommended breakfast spot in Taiwan, known for their soy milk and rice balls. This is a limited time collaboration that’s actually pretty hard to find – with some people standing in line for ALMOST 2 HOURS to get this in Taipei.

If you never tried a classic Taiwanese hot rice ball before, imagine a layer of sticky rice wrapped around some fried egg, Chinese doughnuts, sweet and salty pork floss, and spicy pickled radishes. In one bite you get crunchy and crispy and chewy all at once!

If you have a chance to try this rice ball, don’t forget to have the heat it up for you! Trust me, it makes this rice ball 10 times better!

Michelin Recommended Breakfast Soy Milk – 9/10

Next is the Soy Milk from the same Fuhang Soy Milk collaboration as the rice ball – 阜杭豆漿. This soy milk was PERFECT: not too sweet and still super rich and creamy. I really wasn’t expecting this kind of creaminess from a convenience store soy milk. For 35 NTD, the price is a little on the higher side for bottled soy milk, but the quality truly makes up for it. This actually tastes really good and really comparable to the ones you get at the actual Fuhang Soy Milk restaurant.

Double Cheese Ham and Egg Sandwich – 8/10

I also grabbed a Double Cheese Ham and Egg Sandwich 原賞雙倍起司火腿蛋三明治. This is something I’ve eaten lots growing up. Whenever I didn’t know what to eat for breakfast. we will go get sandwiches at 7-11. This particular line of sandwiches has a bunch of different flavors from grilled chicken sandwich to blueberry cream cheese.

This double cheese ham and egg sandwich is made in the classic Taiwanese Breakfast Sandwich style: thin slices of ingredients sandwiched between fluffy milk bread with no crust. Each one comes with two sandwiches wrapped in easy-to-open packaging. Every bite is the perfect ratio: bread, egg, cream cheese, and ham. It really brings me back to my childhood!

Grab and Go 7-11 Steamed Yams – 7.5/10

One of my favorite things to grab at Taiwanese convenience stores are grilled or steamed yams. This is one of the many grab-and-go hot foods you can get anytime in Taiwan. It’s healthy, cheap, and always delicious! 7-Eleven actually the only convenient store that steams their yams, compared to the usual slow roast machines, to provide a healthier option.

These steamed yams always hit the spot! They’re steamed until fluffy in the middle, so it’s super creamy and smooth on the inside. They peel super easily, and are totally mess-free!

Classic 7-11 Tea Eggs – 7/10

If you’re ever wondering what smells so good when you walk into a Taiwanese convenience store, it’s most likely Tea Eggs. Every store has a pot of these eggs slowly simmering in the corner. Tea eggs is a classic cheap and filling Taiwanese snack, especially after school.

These hard boiled eggs are first cracked then left to simmer in a mix of soy sauce, tea leaves, and spices. The flavor of the tea seeps deep into the egg, so every bite has its unique aroma. After soaking for a while, these eggshells just fall right off. If you’re thinking about these eggs now, you can try this Authentic Taiwanese tea egg recipe I shared to make them right at home!
