My Go-To Healthy Purple Multigrain Rice Blend

Many of you have been asking me about my Purple Multigrain Rice Blend that we’ve used while teaching Dom the Spicy Stir Fry Steak Bowl recipe. I ran out of it this week, so let’s restock my grained rice together! I’m using several different grains: black sweet rice, pressed barley, mung beans, sweet rice, and of course, white rice. Let’s go into detail on what goes into my special purple rice!

Purple Multigrain Rice Blend

Multigrain Rice: A Healthier Option Than Just White Rice

White rice is great, but it’s higher in calories and doesn’t contain as much fiber or nutrients. On days where I want to eat a bit healthier, I use this yummy purple multigrain rice as my base in place of white rice.

Multigrain rice contains plenty of fiber, so it feel much more filling. It also contains so many other nutrients that a simple white rice doesn’t provide – from minerals to vitamins. It’s delicious paired with anything – from a Air Fried Salmon to Chicken Curry.

What Goes into My Multigrain Rice Mix

I like mixing my Multigrain Mix in bulk separately, and adding white rice later, because it allows me to better adjust based on my preferences for the day. My go-to ratio is 3 cups of white rice to 1 cup of multigrain mix: it’s the perfect combo of having the nice chew but still also not being too overly sticky

  • Short Grain Brown Rice – antioxidant, blood sugar control, rice in fiber
  • Black Sweet Rice – improve liver health, rich in fiber and iron, plus gives it that beautiful purple color!
  • Pressed Barley – this is my favorite ingredient! it lower cholesterol and boosts energy
  • Barley – boosts immunity, skin elasticity, anti-inflammatory
  • Peeled Mung Bean – high in potassium, copper, and fiber
  • Short Grain Sweet Rice – gives a nice chewy texture

Multigrain Mix (Mix 1 part of each in bulk)

As for how much water goes into the rice, I usually do the fingertip method: put your finger vertically to the top of the rice and fill the to water a little below the first line of your finger!

  1. Mix 1 part of each into a larger container: Short Grain Brown Rice, Black Sweet Rice, Pressed Barley, Barley, Peeled Mung Bean, and Short Grain Sweet Rice. You can do this in bulk, and take 1 cup at a time when cooking.
  2. OPTIONAL: If you like a softer texture, you can soak the rice ahead of time for about 30 minutes.
  3. Wash and drain the rice mix and put into the rice cooker.
  4. Add water to the mix using the finger method, and turn the rice cooker on “cook”. If your rice cooker has a “multigrain” option, you can also use that.

Had to switch from just white rice for health reasons, but hate brown rice. I actually enjoy this multigrain blend.
