Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice (20 minutes!)

Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice

Don’t judge me until you try it; Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice is seriously delicious and easy to make at home.

We all have that childhood dish that is comforting and brings a smile to our face; mine is my dad’s Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice.

I know it may seem weird to add ketchup to your fried rice, but the savouriness of the spam plus the tangy and sweetness from the ketchup is seriously a match made in heaven.

Give this Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice recipe a try, and it may also be your comforting dish.

Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice

Growing up, my mom and grandma was the chef in the family; however, if there is one dish that my dad made better than anyone is his Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice.

Whenever my mom was busy or out of town, my sister and I would request my dad to make us Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice.

Even though the fried rice was simple, all the flavors worked together perfectly. If you are feeling fancy, top the fried rice with a fried egg, and you got yourself the perfect lunch.

crispy meat

Spam and Ketchup Fried Rice is super affordable and easy to make at home.

You only need day-old rice, spam, ketchup, egg, frozen vegetables, and soy sauce. There are a few secret steps that my dad does that make this fried rice extra special.

  • First, pan-fries the spam until it becomes crispy. This simple step will add great texture to the dish.
  • Second, pan-fries the spam with some soy sauce. Even though the spam is already seasoned, adding soy sauce to the spam will instantly elevate the flavor.
  • Third, make sure ALWAYS use day-old rice. You don’t want the rice to stick together, so using cold, day-old rice will help the dish become nice and fluffy.
protein can be adjusted

Like many other Fried Rice recipes, this recipe is also super customizable.

For example, If you don’t like spam, you can substitute for hot dogs, bacon, or ham.

I want to use spam as Spam is affordable but also packed with flavor. Another substitution you can make is adding a different type of frozen vegetables or adding even more protein.

Always add the sauce and the rice last, since once you add in the rice, you want to quickly saute on high heat while making all the flavors together so it doesn’t become soggy.

QUICK TIP: break the rice apart with your hands before adding it to the pan.

This will help ensure the rice is not stuck together and doesn’t become soggy. Wet your hands with cold water before breaking the rice apart so the rice doesn’t stick to your hands.

About Me
Hi! I am Tiffy and I am a HUGE foodie. I love to cook, I love to eat, and I love sharing what I love with the world.
I was born in Taiwan, a country with some of the best street food in the world. When I think back to my childhood, I remember all the fantastic restaurants my dad brought me to when I was young. You see, my family is also huge foodies; we use to wander around night markets every weekend, skip the last period in class to try out new restaurants, and every summer, we would travel around Taiwan exploring all the new “must try” dishes around the country.
