Weekend Hojicha and 10K Run Routine

I love my morning matcha routines, but on the weekends, I like to be more relaxed. For my birthday, Dom and I went to a tea tasting at Cultivate Tea that really taught me about matcha, hojicha, and the differences between the two.

Now, when I don’t need to be up and about, I choose a gentle Hojicha Latte to get me through the day. Its lower caffeine content does give a light pick-me-up, but not as intensely. And, I still get to keep my tea routine! After a 10k run, that icy milk tea really hits the spot!

  • 1.5 tsp hojicha powder

Hojicha VS Matcha

Hojicha is a toasted green tea that has a significantly lower amount of caffeine compared to other teas. The roasting also makes this tea a lot gentler on your stomach. After whisking, it has a deep brownish color that almost looks like hot chocolate.

I got to try a hojicha and matcha latte tasting at Cultivate Tea for my birthday. Their hojicha for latte is from Uji, where a lot of matcha is produced. It is actually my current favorite! Its mild and smooth flavor goes well with milk without being overpowered.

The Best Milk For Your Hojicha Latte

The base for this hojicha latte is, of course, the milk. You can use your favorite type of milk for this latte: whole milk, almond milk, soy milk, and non-fat milk are all great options. My personal favorite type of milk to use is the Oatly Oat Milk, which tends to have a richer and thicker flavor than other dairy-free options.

If you’d like to make your latte a little sweeter, I sometimes whisk in sugar, honey, agave syrup, or other sweeteners into my milk before adding hojicha.

The Best Add-Ins for Hojicha Latte

Of course, you can make your hojicha latte fun just like your favorite boba shop. All you need is a little topping or syrup. The nutty, caramel-like flavors of Hojicha matches so well with flavors such as chocolate, brown sugar, nuts, and vanilla.

Some of my favorites include adding a fluffy vanilla cold foam on top. Or, you can add some brown sugar boba inside to really make it a milk tea.

  1. You might have saved me! I’m tired of coffee, but not into tea. I’ve been searching for a while for a not sweet but very creamy hot or cold drink with little interest. This creamy hojicha sounds like it will hit the spot as my drinks MUST be creamy! Maybe it’s your writing style, maybe it’s truly what I’ve needed, but this peaked my interest. I’ve ordered it.
