Crispy Kalette: The Healthiest Salad Topping

This year, I started off the 1st week of the year with some healthy dishes like Homemade Kimchi, and Taiwanese Beef Stew. One of Dom’s favorites this week is definitely the Reverse Sear Steak Salad I made, topped with these Crispy Parmesan Kalettes and Crunchy Candied Walnuts.

This salad was packed with nutrients and flavors, with sweet apples, sour pomegranate, and these savory, crispy kalettes. These mini greens had a nutty but sweet flavor and I was pleasantly surprised at how amazing they turned out. It was so easy to toss them together in less than 10 minutes for a healthy, flavorful side dish.

Oven Roasted Kalettes Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Pepper
  • 1 Tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 Tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 Tsp Parmesan Cheese
  • ¼ Lemon

Kalette: The Kale and Brussel Sprouts Superfood Hybrid

What even are Kalettes? They are apparently a hybrid cross between a Brussel sprout and kale. They grow on a stalk like Brussel Sprouts, but have a leafier structure like kale. This hybrid of 2 superfood is an incredible superfood on its own: it contains TWICE the amount of vitamin C and B6 as Brussel Sprouts. They’re also incredibly high in fiber.

After I found this amazing veggies at Costco the other day, I knew I had to give them a try. I had never seen these kalettes in the grocery store before, but they were not only healthy but tasty! If you don’t have kalettes, kale works well for this recipe as well!

What Seasonings To Add To Crispy Kalettes

These beautiful little leafy kalettes nuggets were simple and perfectly crispy with a quick drizzle of olive oil and seasonings. Today, we added salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, lemon, and some parmesan for a tart, but fragrantly spicy bite.

There’s tons of different ways to season these kalettes, and you’re free to be creative since they’re so versatile. I think a little drizzle of balsamic glaze or a sprinkle of pine nuts might be a fun twist. Or, you can try more Asian flavors instead and add some five-spice powder and white pepper.
